Live Review: Simo Soo & Sissi Reagan give us not your average 'Love Song'

1 March 2017 | 8:51 am | Jackson Langford

SIMO SOO truly has no fucks to give. His latest mixtape - titled We've All Been Tricked Into Thinking This Reality Is Normal & Acceptable, It's Not. Your Anxiety Is Real & Bugging Out Is The Correct Response - was debuted over Instagram live. According to Simo Soo, this "was about presenting what’s it like to release a DIY bedroom rap album with no money." An unglamorous approach to marketing, sure, but an effective and genuine one, as Soo's entire mixtape is anchored in the idea that nothing should be glossed over.

Out of all the tracks on this record, in which guests feature the likes of Lonelyspeck, Marcus Whale & Bilby, no track is more honest than that of 'Love Song', a collaboration with SISSI REAGAN. It's a Copacabana-inspired noise rap banger, with production from BISTRO, that is reminiscent of some of Kreayshawn's more summery inspired gems, like 'Gucci Gucci' and 'Summertime.'

However, unlike Kreayshawn's devotion to excess and luxury, Simo Soo has taken approach that's far more akin to the likes of Lorde and Courtney Barnett. In his lyrics, Soo scrupulously explores the mundanities of every day life - "Just gimme five minutes and I'll go get us some chippies" - and translates it to why he's so in love. Beside the Soo's unique flow that's completely unheard of in the Australian scene, his verses are bookended by Sissi Reagan's summery vocals that elevate the song completely. It's the stark contrast between these two voices that give this track its substance and, while unorthodox, the message of 'Love Song' is a comforting message - love really conquers all.
