Live Review: Roland Tings shares his latest playful track 'Garden Piano'

Picked straight off his forthcoming EP, Each Moment A Diamond, Melbourne’s electronic star and all round legend ROLAND TINGS has returned with a playful new track in ‘Garden Piano’.

We’ve covered quite a few of Tings' tracks over the years, starting off with one of his early releases 'Tomita's Basement', to a more recent track ‘Higher Ground', to then following his movements all around the globe as he toured with the likes of ALUNAGEORGE, CHET FAKER and FACTORY FLOOR. We feel like he’s come along way since the elusive production he created from within the walls of his bedroom - and so does the rest of Australia.

‘Garden Piano’ shows a real sense of maturity as his pace is sharpened and his catchy repetitive samples form a crisp rendition of electronica. This growth comes as the direct result of infusing routine into his work. “I developed a repetitive routine, riding my bike to the studio the same way, eating the same thing for breakfast, hanging at the same places. And then just working on music like it was a 9-5 job,” he says.

Although Tings has matured in his sound, he’s still as mischievous and playful as ever in his latest track. ‘Garden Piano’ is exactly what you’d expect from a hyper, ecstatic young kid who’s just gorged himself on sugar after years of dietary restrictions; a combination of energy and a sudden jolt of relaxation. Tings uses his signature vintage videogame-like samples to keep the track light and animated but tones it down just a tad with his new repetitive edge.

It’s a versatile track, one that you can use to pep yourself up or slow yourself down depending on how you interpret the compilation of sounds. Tings has literally created a track that moulds to you, making it easily understood why Aussie electronic fans have warmly welcomed him into their arms. If this is just a glimpse into the new EP then wake us up upon its release!
