Live Review: Kemi Ade shows us the path to enlightenment in 'Third'

22 March 2017 | 8:26 am | Steve Copp

Following in the foot-steps of neo-soul queens before her, Kemi Ade gets to showing us the path to enlightenment in her newest release 'Third'.

As the global consciousness shifts more and more towards spirituality, it leaves the door wide open for a soul star like KEMI ADE to breakthrough from all the falsity and unrealistic expectations of celebrity, to bring everyone a little closer together with the sweet sounds of humanity. Her newest release, 'Third', is a culmination of spiritual awakenings, and heartfelt personal expression all on one groovy as hell track.

She speaks of the opening of the third eye, something humans have fumbled around for generations. ADE's power is misplaced in a world where the ideas she speaks about can only be expressed in human metaphor, but she has found the ultimate medium for expression: her music.

Certain feelings can only be described musically with detached human metaphor. Not many can say they've nailed the metaphor of a spiritual awakening like Kemi does in this track. Using love as the catalyst for her awakening, she floats through trying to express to her lover the imaginary path that they need to take in order to join her in the majesty that is enlightenment. Following in the prophetic footsteps of the likes of Erykah BaduJill Scott and more, Ade truly shines here.

Her newest fortune cookie of subtle wisdom- the EP entitled O.W.Nesty (read: Honesty)- in the words of Ade herself "is my way of encouraging people to immerse themselves in a pure moment, even if it's just for 16 minutes." Over splashy cymbals, a funky bassline, an array of intriguing samples and a rich melody, Ade puts urgency on the need to take your time. Singing of possibilities and the opportunity to see more, she highlights just how pure a moment can be - something that often gets forgotten in the world today. You'd be surprised what a young woman from Croydon, South London can teach you about yourself.

Enjoy!
