Live Review: Gussy’s stunning new single ‘Mornings’ is here, complete with self-directed video clip

Gussy has just dropped 'Mornings', a track made with the help of Strict Face, Marcus Whale, and Christopher Port, as well as a self-directed video clip.

Sydney-based singer, song writer, producer and dancer GUSSY has just released their new single ‘Mornings’. With Strict Face helping out on production, mixing from Christopher Port, mastering by Jessica Cooper and vocal engineering from Marcus Whale, it’s no surprise that this track is quality. The accompanying video clip is equally remarkable, written and directed by Gussy, with the help of cinematography from Joe Brennan.

Gussy spoke of the new clip, saying, "The song and video are about fighting of all kinds, and trying hard to think of new ways to make up. The feeling of waking up in the morning after a fight — it's like that everyday at the moment, living in the world.” Shot across a number of locations, from a bedroom to a rain-drenched rooftop carpark, the clip for ‘Mornings’ reflects that sentiment of acknowledging and accepting sadness in order to remain strong in times of pain. Gussy dances throughout the clip in clothes they designed themselves, with raw emotion and a striking stare.

The track itself is short but sweet, clocking in at under three minutes. It’s clean, tight pop with a tinge of quirky electronica in the production and percussion that’s light on its feet. Poignant lyrics on the intricacies of dealing with conflict within relationships cap off a clever but humble tune.

Gussy is still fairly new to the scene, with just a few tracks under their belt, but they’ve already received high praise - Heaps Gay’s ‘Queer Crush of the Week’, FBi Radio’s ‘Independent Artist of the Week’, #16 in the ‘Noisey 100’, and a feature in FBi's The Bridge’s ‘Class of 2016 Compilation’. That’s some serious recognition, and to be pushing the boundaries of what we expect from an artist is brave and powerful in its own right, but to be perfectly honest, at the end of the day, Gussy’s music is just incredible.
