Live Review: Woesum's 'Petunia' video is a twisted, animated underworld

8 December 2016 | 8:55 am | Jackson Langford

Have you ever wondered what the inside of your first ever computer would look like if it dropped a tab or two? Well, Swedish act WOESUM has tried damn hard to put it in video form with his new banger 'Petunia' and we reckon he might have hit the nail on the head.

Produced by London-based Hoon, the visual for the brooding, gloomy song is stunning in a disturbing type of way. Think if David Lynch directed a cross over of any Tame Impala video and the video for A-ha's 'Take On Me', this is probably what it would look like. It's glitchy, colourful and haunting all at the same time.

The track itself is something to be marvelled at too. Woesum haunts the listener straight from the jump, with staccato echoing bells and sharp, stabbing rounds of brass that definitely should not be listened to by yourself in the dark. The rest of the song is carried on by a synthesised flute melody that could be a soundtrack to the Bowser's Castle level of Mariokart, and is "best enjoyed with eyes closed." The song never stops growing, as the flute melody becomes more high pitched and encapsulates the listener into this deep, ominous experience. It'll give you goosebumps but you'll be pressing play once again as soon as the song is over.

'Petunia' marks the newest release from Sidechains, a Sydney-based collective, and has copped a mighty fine remix from Swedish-born, New York-based Acea. Woesum also has produced tracks on the way for both A$AP Ferg and Yung Lean, so be sure to keep your ear to the ground for those sure-to-be dark gems.
