Artists to Watch in 2017: MEZKO

30 December 2016 | 8:55 am | Hannah Galvin

Sydney duo MEZKO have made a lasting impression on 2016. With their debut EP on its way, we're keen to see what the next avenue is for the girls!

Take one Kat Harley, a Laura Bailey, a couple of guitars, krautrock influence, acid filtered synths, restrained vocals, and hints of sonic understanding from musical cultures outside of the Western world, to navigate one of the most distinctive Sydney outfits of today, and what do you get? MEZKO.

A little difficult to believe all of that sound comes from just two pairs of hands, the duo's sole mission is to marry their skill of live instrumentation with their love of the electronic music realm.

Since throttling onto our radar with 'Steady On' in 2015, MEZKO have released a handful of singles worthy of high radio rotation, as donned by tastemakers Triple JFBi Radio and 2SER with accompanying film clips. They've supported Gold ClassHomeshakeKing Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and Emma Louise, smashed their own headlining shows and sets at King Street Crawl and Junkyard Fest, and even partied with us at our very own Tenth Birthday, Sounds Like A Heaps Gay Purple Sneakers Time, and EMC showcase with UNDR ctrl. Oh, and they were also a finalist (one of eight chosen contenders) for FBi Radio's Northern Lights competition; where a local act gets flown over the waters for the Iceland Airwaves Music Festival, no biggie.

Naturally moulding an effortless aesthetic, these two ladies are real purveyors of their craft, and echo a sense of authenticity that cannot be taught or appropriated. Providing intensive, energetic and heaving music that comes at such an intensity it will convert any nearby window into a pile of shattered glass, be sure to catch MEZKO live at your next opportunity. By next opportunity, we mean during Mosquito Coast's 'Television Love' Tour, where the ladies will take the national main support slot. You'll see what we mean.

With their debut EP due to drop early 2017 on their very own imprint, Dark Matter Records, it can only go up from here.
