Artists to Watch in 2017: London Topaz

30 December 2016 | 9:30 am | Dan Hill

Not much is known about LONDON TOPAZ, the latest production talent to emerge from the musical hotbed that is Melbourne. However, although the mystery producer's back catalogue consists of just two tracks at the time of writing, there is no doubt that this moniker is a name you'll be hearing alongside the best and brightest of the house music genre in years to come.

Arriving out of nowhere in June this year, London Topaz’s first outing with 'Hybrid Heart' impressed audiences and music critics alike. This was the first taste of the production wunderkind’s gift for layering polished vocal cuts and immersive atmospheres over deep, hypnotic rhythms. With ‘Hybrid Heart’, he stamped his intention to become a heavyweight in the Australian music scene.

Flash forward two months and, in conjunction with STONEY ROADS RECORDS, London Topaz dropped what has become a serious contender for deep house track of 2016 in ‘Let You Go’. Featuring the vocal talents of fellow Melbournite JANEVA, the producer’s second official release smashed wide open the current perceptions of what Australian dance music has to offer. Invoking a spellbinding display of emotive minimalism, the song captured the hearts and minds of listeners worldwide and was quickly picked up across the country by new fans and tastemakers alike.

Following this, London Topaz’s star has continued to rise, and recently cracked 100k streams on Spotify. Not bad for a producer with only two releases to his name.

Looking forward, 2017 is set to hold big things for the production prodigy. Behind the scenes, London Topaz has been busy preparing his immersive live show, which is set to premiere at Beyond The Valley festival over the New Years period. Furthermore, with a new single set to be released early next year, as well as an EP featuring RUFUS-collaborator DENA AMY and others in the works, it is clear that 2017 is going to be a year to remember for this Melbourne enigma.
