Live Review: Watch the neon summer dreams of Fickle Friend's 'Brooklyn'

29 November 2016 | 2:37 pm | Lloyd Crackett

Fickle Friends have mastered the slick indie-pop with their latest music video ‘Brooklyn’ directed by Charlotte Rutherford.

FICKLE FRIENDS have mastered the slick indie-pop track, with their latest single ‘Brooklyn’ which has a killer hook, danceable groove and whip-smart lyrics. Combine that with a music video directed by Charlotte Rutherford, who has previously worked with Perfume Genius and Marina and the Diamonds, Fickle Friends have absolutely nailed indie-pop perfection.

The music video for ‘Brooklyn’ captures the en vogue 1980s America. Playing out like a snippet of a rom-com remake of Drive, neon lights, swimming pools and the campy colours of a time gone bring the song to life. The music video jumps from place to place, featuring synchronised dancing outside of an old supermarket, a performance by the pool and the assumedly ‘brooklyn baby’, falling backwards into the pool before she emerges coquettishly.

The overall aesthetic of the video complements the song; the lyrics, while catchy and sung upbeat, are poignant and nostalgic. Natti Shiner sings in awe, repeating over and over “You are someone else” undercutting it with, “You are not mine”. The video and song capture the perfect summer fling, rose-tinted and passionate yet stuck in time. Fickle Friends are well on their way to become indie-pop staples through their uncanny ability to catch a moment.
