Live Review: Amateur Dance's top five highly emotional music videos

18 November 2016 | 3:20 pm | Emma Jones

At the forefront of the burgeoning Australia music scene lies a select few that are constantly innovative, consistently creative and always offer up their very best in all they touch. One such artist is AMATEUR DANCE. One of Melbourne's best producers (in this editor's opinion at least), Amateur Dance continues to go from strength to strength, carving out his own space with his emotionally changed dance music. The kind of music that you hear at 3am on a thinning dancefloor, when you're stuck in your head and feeling a bit vulnerable, Amateur Dance has always done his own thing. He just gets better and better at it.

Amateur Dance will be releasing a new EP by the name of Love System, which will be out next Friday 25 via October Records & Anjunadeep. Set to play at Good MannersMelbourne Music Week Official Closing Party this weekend, we asked Amateur Dance to tell us about his top five highly emotional clips, or in his words, 'Top 5 Music Videos That Emotionally Pwned Me For Like A Week'. Check out his picks below, and catch him at the official closing party of Melbourne Music Week, curated by Good Manners. Info on that here.

Kollektiv Turmstrasse - Tristesse (Fan Video)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kw1NCddhvJQ

This fan-made music video pwned me in my emotions for like a week (+4 years and counting). It's a clip from Fantasia set to the Kollektiv Turmstrasse track 'Tristesse' and it is such a perfect pairing that I would think it had been devised by an advanced machine-learning algorithm that considered all possible combinations of music and video, were it not for the fact it's one of the most touching things I've ever seen. Add to this the fact that the story is completely cyclical meaning you can watch it looping for days on end and you've got some pretty huge potential for emotional pwnage :(

tofubeats - おしえて検索 feat.の子

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHwWgbP4df8

This track and video pwned me for like a week. Tofubeats is typically a pretty eclectic producer but this track is absolutely wild, from the house chord progression to the auto-tuned overdriven vocals, emo vocal hook, garage-rock guitar and incredible pop melodies throughout. More and more liberties are taken with the production as the track nears it's end,  and any regard for the listener is thrown out the window in favour of 8-bit glitchouts and absurd midi piano interludes that are ironically extremely fun to listen to and further contribute to the sheer uplifting attitude of the song. It's just so damn catchy :(

Tedeschi Trucks Band - Midnight In Harlem (Guitar Solo, Live At Orpheum Theatre)

https://youtu.be/bIivRlhwvS4?t=3609                                                                                                 *** runs from 1:00:09 - 1:04:32 ***

This guitar solo basically had me pwned for like a week. Does a 4-minute guitar solo excerpt from a soul band's live concert count as a music video? It's my list buddy. I don't even really like the song that it occurs in, but this guitar solo straight up breaks me. Derek Trucks (the guitarist) basically emulates the sensual lows and soaring peaks of a good RnB song on slide guitar, and so much more. This guitar solo is so good that it honestly transcends any written description I could give and as such I pledge to anybody reading this that if they listen to the full thing I will buy them a drink if they approach me IRL and tell me. That's how much I care about this damn guitar solo :(

Oneohtrix Point Never - Memory Vague / nobody here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RFunvF0mDw

It's one thing that this emotionally pwned me for like a week, it's another thing that it's essentially a 7-second loop and is as such incredibly hard to feel satisfied with (all part of the pwnage). I said too much about that damn guitar solo so I'll be brief here, I hope you don't end up infinitely looping this video like I always do :(

Above & Beyond - Good For Me (Fan Video)

https://vimeo.com/8405267

You know how long this video pwned me for? Like a week. This will be the second time I've used up space in a press opportunity to talk about how good trance is but this truly fits the parameters of the article and if this video doesn't effect you a little bit you don't have a pulse. The drumless album version of 'Good For Me' by Above and Beyond set to clips from BBC's Planet Earth of the biggest (and massivest) and most beautiful f*cking mountains you've ever seen. Doesn't it make you wonder if anyone will ever be this good for you? :(
