Blur genres with ‘Everyone’, Mezko’s dark new single

MEZKO are the Sydney based multi-instrumentalists Kat Harley and Laura Bailey, and they’re back with their signature dark and obscure pop. This time, with their track, ‘Everyone’, they push even further into the darkness, employing techno beats, acid riffs and eastern inspired hooks.

Mezko have already had a massive year becoming an FBi Independent Artist of the Week, signing to their new label Dark Matter Records and touring NSW with EMMA LOUISE, which has seen their live shows become lively and memorable affairs.

‘Everyone’ is a melting pot of genres; with the slick production of a pop song it feels like Goldfrapp inspired by krautrock. There is a menacing feeling that pervades the entire track, a sinking sort of feeling that’s only held at bay by the need to groove along with the obscure beat. It is this complexity, this colliding of influences that make it hard to just call it pop. The vocals are cult-like and the beats are momentous.

The track couldn’t slide into your average pop playlist. It’s beyond a single genre which is exactly what Mezko are trying to do. In an interview with us earlier this year, Mezko said, “We’re beginning to become comfortable with letting go of the idea that we have to stick to one genre and work within it.” Mezko have achieved their goal.

‘Everyone’ is Mezko’s second release from their hotly awaited EP due to drop in Feburary 2017. Yet in the mean time Mezko have promised a stunning video clip directed by Joel Burrows to be released soon. Mezko have described it as “completing the track with a dark and surreal journey into the night.”
