Strict Face takes us in and around Adelaide ahead of Melbourne Music Week

9 November 2016 | 12:44 pm | Lauren Payne

Set to play at Melbourne Music Week next week, we got to know Adelaide's Strict Face, signed to NLV Records, as he takes us around his hometown.

Since the birth of NLV Records, we've been exposed to some of the greatest upcoming production talent like STRICT FACE. The producer blends industrial samples with grime-infused beats and releases tracks that can only really be called infectious.

Strict Face has toured with TOKiMONSTA, played at Paradise Music Festival, toured the UK and is now about to play at the Zoo Alleyway Party during Melbourne Music Week alongside Blackmilk, Yeo and a bunch of other amazing artists.

With Strict Face touring all over the joint, we thought it might be good to ask him about his hometown of Adelaide and what he misses about it whilst out on tour.

Twenty Fifty-Two
"Melbourne and Sydney might have us beat when it comes to good streetwear/menswear joints, but I'm really glad we have Twenty Fifty-Two to call our own. I mean, they have a really sick capsule collection of their own on top of a well-curated range of labels (think Passport, Fuct, and Gasius), for starters. They always seem to blast NTS Radio on the speakers, which is a bonus. The guys who work there are also some of the friendliest staff I've ever come across at a streetwear spot as well. Not two, but THREE birds with one stone, my Gs. "

"This is where you go if you're easily jaded by state art galleries. There's never been a bad exhibition I've laid eyes on at this spot, hand on bible. The way artists have carte blanche (within reason, of course) with what they do to the space and transform the rooms into a world of its own is amazing in its own right. Also, at their exhibition openings, Ben and Brigid (the gallery's owners) bring their dog with them and it's the best thing ever. Cracking open a Pale Ale (or a Pirate Life, if you're lucky) while hanging out with a dog at an art gallery? That's the life."

Brighton Beach
"Most of our beaches (that AREN'T Glenelg) are sick (duh), but Brighton takes the cake. I mean, there's not as much tourists to begin with, so you can enjoy the beach view without spotting a lot of selfie sticks. There's also the fact that it's spacious enough that you can literally set up base wherever and not look over your shoulder every two seconds so no-one jacks your valuables. I mean, the water at our beaches is pretty consistent, but Brighton gives me the most privacy. It probably helps that Brighton Jetty Bakery also happens to be around the corner too."

"There are a LOT of really good food spots in Adelaide, so this was hard. Until Top Rank BBQ sets up a permanent spot, take my word on this one. The veggie + soy curry, spicy eggplant and not fish in peanut sauce are my faves, but all of their dishes are incredible (coming from a non-vegan.) They're pretty considerate towards your wallet too - three choices on a dinner-sized plate for just under $10 or a bit of everything for an extra $2 or so. The Chinatown foodcourt it's in happens to have a bar which serves Asahi and Coopers' Pale Ales too, so it's a winner."

Ancient World
"Like restaurants, we've been spoilt for choice with clubs in Adelaide over the years. Ancient World's kind of gained a special place in my heart over the last two years though because I've never really seen anything like it in this city. It's garnered a special community from a very diverse range of scenes, to start with. I can only think of two clubs here whose soundsystems are more or less in the same tier of quality as the one at AW. Also, for every potential flaw I might have with the club, it's hard to fault it when it's a bar run by some of the sweetest, most supportive people out there. Not bad for a bar with an alleyway as the only entrance point, huh? There's also one other thing which tops off my love for this place, but you'll have to ask me in person."
