Live Review: Clipping. bust some shots and moves in 'Shooter' Video

7 November 2016 | 12:33 pm | Aiden Benavides

Clipping have had a tremendous year when it comes to releases and they aren't stopping because they have just put out a video for their track 'Shooter'

After the successes of Wriggle EP and their album, Splendor and Misery, Clipping. have had a tremendous year when it comes to releases and they aren't stopping any time soon. Having just put out a video for their track 'Shooter' from their Wriggle EP, the trio are back once again with some more fantastic visuals.

The lyrics on this track take semi colon/hashtag rap to the extreme with the entire track following the hashtag rap motif of putting the rhyme/punchline separate and at the end of each line. A good example would be the opening lines:

"Don't move nothin', statue //

Shooter 'bout to go nuts, cashew"

'Shooter' sticks with this style of rap while describing a story of three different dangerous gunmen, managing to keep consistency with the delivery rather than the subject matter.

The beat is comprised of different gun sounds which the band shot and recorded themselves. Doubling down on the use of gunshots and the use of hashtag raps is a testament to Clipping's habit of excess, taking an idea used by others and pushing it to its extreme. Rather than use things like gunshots for a sound effect, they make the track reliant on them and rather using hashtag raps for a easy punchline, they base the whole song around them.

The video is a new step for Clipping. The video taking place in a black room with Daveed Diggs rapping while his surrounding changes according to the song. What makes this video stand out from other Clipping. videos is the use of choreography. Anyone who has followed the group for awhile knows how their music isn't exactly dance friendly, but the group have put together some interesting and fitting moves for 'Shooter'.

Producer William Hutson says of the visual and song:

Since the beginning of the band, we had discussed making a dance video for one of our songs but didn't think we could actually pull it off. When Voltaire Wade-Green offered to choreograph something for us, we jumped at the chance to work with him and the other dancers (all of whom were Hamilton ensemble members at the time). He and Carlos conceived the video together based on the scenarios of gun violence depicted in the song’s lyrics, and managed to match the cheery tone of the song to the seriousness of its themes.

With a backlog of tracks from their last two releases, Clipping. have plenty up their sleeves for potential visual treatment, so we are keen to see what new and interesting ideas the group comes up with next.
