Live Review: Isaiah Rashad and GoldLink slow it down on "Untitled"

26 October 2016 | 12:56 pm | Aiden Benavides

Goldlink is on a roll, coming out right after his single 'Fall in Love' comes the laid back funk vibes of 'Untitled' which features Isaiah Rashad.

Goldlink is on a roll. Right after he dropped his upbeat funk single 'Fall in Love', comes the slow funk vibes of 'Untitled', featuring both TDE signed rapper Isaiah Rashad and singer Preston Harris.

Starting off, the wonderful production of The Antydote creates a soulful atmosphere at the very start of the track. By introducing us to a slow paced funk bass line accompanied by a violin and keys, The Antydote really sets the mood right for a introspective and thoughtful tune. He has a history of creating songs that fuse funk, soul and hip-hop, so collaborating with like minded artists like Kendrick Lamar, Isaiah Rashad and now Goldlink who can maximise the emotional potential of the beats with their lyrics makes total sense - and really great music.

Isaiah Rashad starts the song with a mumbled verse that is densely filled with themes of drug use and the pursuit of wealth with the search for happiness. What makes the verse is the flow, which manages to contrast the smooth funk production with rough and tired sounding vocals that hit every mark rhythmically. More contrast can be heard after Rashad's verse as the hook by Preston Harris features some beautifully layered singing that hits on the higher range of notes when compared to Rashad's low growling delivery.

Goldlink, unlike Rashad, embraces the beat more with his rap delivery by slightly vibrating each syllable and almost imitating the chopped and filtered melody lines of the production. The lyrics of his verse deal with ideas of love in a morose fashion, telling the story of a love which is ultimately bad and unobtainable for Goldlink but is enticing enough he is willing to do bad things for a chance at it.

Everything from the production to the lyrics filled with meaning make 'Untitled' a great contrast to Goldlink's last song 'Fall in Love'. 'Untitled' is simply a joy to listen to and we hope to hear more tracks from Goldlink soon.
