Live Review: Cool Company redefine smooth with 'Slice Of Paradise'

Cool Company is a Brooklyn R&B/hip-hop duo composed of vocalist Yannick Hughes aka Cool Yan and producer Matt Fishman aka Fat Matt. The duo has just put out their smooth debut album, Slice of Paradise.

Smooth is a word often thrown around a lot when an funk/soul inspired R&B album comes out, but know that with Cool Company's Slice of Paradise, it's well deserved. The producer/vocalist combo matches funky bass lines, smooth keys and skilful drums with the excellent vocal range of Cool Yan. 

On the topic of production, the album features a wide range of beats that contain a multitude of music ideas. Every beat feels fresh, while there are similar elements like funky bass lines and piano, others are dynamically switched in and out creating texture and life that we can't get enough of.

This album can sound like many things. Sometimes it plays up the modern R&B sound and other times it goes back to different time periods with a modern twist. Taking elements from funk, soul and even 90's R&B, Cool Company create a fusion of sound that will keep your full attention.

The vocals provided by Cool Yan are versatile, managing to feel at home on the 17 tracks. He hits a wide range of notes and his song writing shows off some of his best singing over emotional lyrics, singing of love and relationships. Cool Company have made it their business to create interesting and fun music to listen to.

Cool Company have made a great first impression with their debut album and we are keen to hear whatever they have in store for the follow up.
