Live Review: Cakes Da Killa relishes in the single life in 'New Phone (Who Dis)'

Cakes Da Killa has put out his debut album Hedonist, which in short is a musical trip of lust, anger and vice. Now, fresh off that album and teaming up with Red Bull Sound Select, he's released an animated lyric video for his sassy new single, 'New Phone (Who Dis)'.

The lyrics tell a story about Cakes Da Killa getting dumped with but unlike many other songs it doesn't deal with the heartbreak of a break up. Instead, Cakes enjoys his new life, moving on to new partners, improving himself and enjoying life so much so that when his ex tries to call him to get him back Cakes gives the cold reply, "New phone, who dis?" It's refreshing to have a song that doesn't focus on the negatives of a break up but instead has a focus on the satisfaction that one can have after becoming single.

The vocal delivery is what is expected of Cakes Da Killa, aggressive and hard hitting. The amount of emotion that Cakes puts into every word can be heard. You can hear the joy in voice while he raps and you can tell he really enjoyed performing this song.

The beat is also typical for Cakes Da Killa, so you can expect some heavy bass alongside catchy synth hits. There's something interesting during the middle of the track where the beat slows down and everything sounds ultra pitched down and stretched for a period before kick back in to the normal speed. It really gives emphasis to the lines in that part of the song, and adds something interesting to the production.

Hedonist is out now and it features tracks like 'Talking Greezy', 'Up Out My Face' and 'New Phone (Who Dis)'. Cakes spits fire on every track he's on along with having witty one liners and interesting production for every song. 'New Phone (Who Dis)' is just another in a long line of great songs by Cakes Da Killa and we are always keen to hear more.
