Live Review: Allow Factory Floor to educate you on rhythm & escape

11 September 2016 | 9:27 pm | Hannah Galvin

UK duo, Factory Floor. have just pushed out their second record, 25 25, through the legendary, DFA Records, so we got them to curate our Soundcloud Wrap!

Shaved down into a two piece, UK-based acid house duo, FACTORY FLOOR, have just released their second record, 25 25.

Also their second release through James Murphy's legendary label, DFA Records25 25 explores new territories for the duo, with an incredibly raw and minimalist approach. Three years subsequent to the self-titled debut, Nik Void and Gabriel Gurnsey have darkened their palette, yet still manage to maintain their distinctive Factory Floor voice in all of their endeavours. Alongside precise composition materialising their signature hallucinatory demeanour, the pair have employed David Wrench (CaribouFKA Twigs) on mixing duties for the ultimate razor-sharp finish.

An album to be experienced by any late-night club enthusiast, we wanted to dig even deeper into the brains driving Factory Floor. Result? A 10-piece collection by member, Gabriel Gurnsey, curating a soundtrack with heavy emphasis on rhythm and escape.

South London Ordnance 'Use of Weapons'

South London Ordnance has done so many good releases – here’s a more recent one. Pure escapism through repetition.

Spectres 'Sea of Trees' (Richard Fearless Remix)

Stunning remix this. What I love about his work is the simplicity and restraint, but it has the ability to take you on the best journeys.

Jennifer Cardini & Shonky 'Lies'

I love it when the melody is produced by percussive sounds. I’ve only recently come across this, but it’s a real journey. Big fan of Jennifer's.

The Two Mamarrachos Feat. Snem K 'Teach Me' (Factory Floor remix)

I’m really fond of this remix purely based on the vocal. This is probably the only remix where I didn’t touch the vocal lines at all and wanted to underpin it with a driving shaker rhythm, but keep it dreamlike. Great memories of working on this in the middle of the Andalucia desert in Spain.

D’MARC Cantu 'Rival'

I first heard this down at Drone Records’s studio in London, overlooking the Thames. I was blown away. Check out the A side of this - ‘Decay‘. Sadly it’s not on Soundcloud or I would’ve put that in too!

Dollkraut 'Fire' (ICP remix)

Justin Simon is a modular synth king and his approach to his tracks is so inspiring. Each sound is carefully placed but maintains such a human feel. Would love to work with him in the studio one day.

Nina Kraviz 'Aus Feat. King Aus on the Mic'

Diggin' these wonky rhythms on Nina’s debut.

Sleeper Thief 'Full of You'

Ok ok, I have no idea what the history of these producers is but there’s always going to be one track from my brothers’ DJ attempts in my mixes.

Ron Trent 'Altered States'

That drum machine! Needs no words.

Silkeye Vs Haroon Mirza 'Elettroencefalogramma'

We’ve worked with Haroon on various projects and he’s such an inspiring person to be around. His ability to create beats from noise and pure electricity is stunning and hopefully there’s more to come from FF vs Haroon Mirza . Check out this rework.
