Live Review: BUOY serves up grooves and good vibes in bassy playlist

17 August 2016 | 1:08 pm | Emma Jones

Ahead of the release of her latest EP and imminent tour, we got BUOY to share what her favourite songs are right now in a little mixtape for us.

BUOY is one of my favourite artists in Australia right now. The way she combines left-field production with her impeccable voice and manages to seamlessly shift between throbbing bass then twinkling, gentle breaks has had me totally enthralled with each and every release.

We named her as an Artist to Watch for this year, and now she's proving us right. After performing at this year's Splendour In The GrassBUOY is set to drop a brand spanking new EP this Friday, through tastemaker niche label, October Records.

Titled Break, we once again are taken on a personal and intimate journey with BUOY, as her unpredictable but always controlled tunes make for heart-wrenching, spine tingling exercises in experimental electronica. It's safe to say we couldn't be more excited for this release, and we have already had our intrigue piqued with the release of lead single, 'Clouds & Rain' - a tune you've probably had stuck in your head like me since you first heard it.

To celebrate the release of Break, we thought we'd get BUOY to spill the beans on what she's currently into by giving us a little mixtape to help get through the week. With an eclectic mix of RnB, dark techno, hip-hop and more, it's clear where BUOY gets the diversity in her music from. Check it out below and mark August 19th in your diaries, Break awaits!

The Internet - Girl

The bass in this gets me. I also love the simplicity of the main vocal melody, so perfect.

Bruce - Steals

An intense pulse in this, two of my favourite things.

Sampa The Great - Blue Bloss

I saw Sampa at Splendour and was in awe of her. Such power. Love this track.

Gesaffelstein - A Pledge

This one is so perfectly haunting. I discovered it from a fashion show video that Christopher Port showed me!

James Blake - Forest Fire

This is stuck in my head on most days lately. Down tempo dream team.

Kelela - Rewind

Kelela’s vocals are heaven. Once again the bass in this so great.

Chance The Rapper - All We Got

Such good vibes. Isolated textures creates degrees of fullness and space.

Kllo - Bolide

Love this so much. The synth that comes in 0.08 blows my mind. Headphones are essential.

Christopher Port - Heavens

UK Garage Heaven! This guy is seriously skilled.

Arca - Front Load

Arca is so distinctive in all he does. Beautiful melody and chord progression in this.

BUOY is also going on tour, see dates below and more info here. Buy Break here.
