Live Review: GRRL PAL 'Submarine'

5 January 2016 | 9:33 am | Emma Jones

Perth duo GRRL PAL have wrapped up their song-a-month project for 2015 in sensational style with the beautifully dreamy new track, 'Submarine'.

We have covered Perth duo GRRL PAL and their song-a-month project extensively this year, so it's only fitting we give the final instalment some love as well. Finishing things off very nicely indeed, the pair wrapped up 2015 in style with their latest single 'Submarine', and yet again outdid themselves with this one.

With Jay Le Kat's now unsurprisingly dreamy vocals leading the way, the track ebbs and flows ever so gently, pulling you in further and further as it goes along. Her sing-songy lyrics give an almost childlike element to the dynamic track, which features soft but trappy beats that almost sound like they shouldn't work as well as they do.

Constantly pushing themselves and sounding better and better with each track, the now 12-song collection also works as a retrospective to hear just how far they've come. From starting off with more than their fair share of anonymity, GRRL PAL have worked hard to put their name on the sonic map of Australia, and it sounds like it's finally about to pay off.

We named them one of our Artists to Watch for this new year, and whilst we don't like to toot our own horn, we are pretty good at picking them. Given that GRRL PAL wound up 2015 with an appearance at BIGSOUND, a collaboration with SLUMBERJACK and a plethora of impressive support slots in their native Perth, it's only fair to say we may just be onto something with these two - and 'Submarine' only cements our predictions even further.
