Live Review: Yuma X 'Matchstick' (Official Video)

21 October 2015 | 4:30 pm | Madeline Kilby

Yuma X have now released a track of their own creation, ‘Matchstick’, along with a wistful video to compliment it like crackers to cheese

YUMA X entered the soundwaves with a splash earlier this year when they released their debut track ‘Swimming Pool’. The slightly mysterious duo have now released a track of their own creation, ‘Matchstick’, along with a wistful video to compliment it like crackers to cheese.

Lucy Washington and Jake Smith make up Yuma X. The pair have been friends for most of their Sydney based lives, and it is clear that an effortless connection creates their sound. A forthcoming EP is in the works, and the pair are currently on tour with RÜFÜS around Australia, however this is about all the info out there about the mysterious duo.

‘Matchstick’ has a dreamy, kind of elusive sound. It is part music box and part meditative. It's combined with a soft electronic percussion and Washington’s raspy and yet angelic vocals, which have been manipulated to create a somewhat haunting sound. The lyrics often contradict each other with lines such as “broken glass, diamond castles’, following the idea of champagne ideas with a beer pocket. The song and the video tell the story of young love in its carefree phase.

The video comes from the same creative team, Entropico, who put together the clip for ‘Swimming Pool’. It plays part two to that video, telling the tale of the same two lovers. Highlights include the use of a Magic Eye book that will really make your day.
