Gypsy & The Cat's Top Five Surprise Albums

29 October 2015 | 1:00 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

After gifting us with a surprise EP, we thought it would be appropriate to ask Gypsy & The Cat what their top five favourite surprise albums were.

What a whirlwind!! Continuing along the same vein of other seminal indie/electronic acts like Van SheMetric and more, Melbourne's GYPSY & THE CAT have perfected the sort of bubbly indie rock, with a tinge of psych, that could capture your attention from within a club, out on a stage or through your headphones.

No matter the setting, Gypsy & The Cat know how to deliver the goods. And deliver the goods they have done.

They've gone and surprised the lot of us with the gift of a new EP. The twist is, no one saw it coming. Titled Hearts A Gun, the EP itself is a gorgeous amalgamation of songwriting-meets-production, with their influences worn on their sleeve, but it maintains its notoriety in its sheer individuality.

They teamed up with Client Liaison for lead single 'Evolution', and the fusion of both groups sounds creates something that I could have sworn came straight out of my Mum's back catalogue of 80's dance tunes.

The EP itself is sunkissed, teetering with blissful innocence and a whimsical sort of value to the production that really makes this one feel lighthearted and comfortable. Consider it more of a precursor; they've got a another big release coming out in 2016.

Speaking of surprise releases, the guys from Gypsy & The Cat gave us a bit of a rundown of their top five favourite surprise albums by producers.

Panda Bear 'Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper'

A huge fan of Panda Bear so when this surprise release came out it was easy to like. Some wonderful sounds and mixed by Sonic Boom whom we are also big fans of.

Dam Funk 'Invite The Light'

This album pays homage to original 80’s funk but with a modern twist. Very nice vibes!

Drake 'If You're Reading This It’s Too Late'

Such a massive album and breaking popularity records around the world, a huge achievement for a surprise album.

Kanye West 'Yeezus'

This was a characteristically bold move to the left from Kanye, a vastly different record from the preceding ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’. It’s dark, it’s raw, it’s industrial, and we are huge fans of this record.

Michael Cera 'True That'

This is not only a surprise album but moreso a surprise that actor Michael Cera even does music. I could only hear this record on youtube but its surprisingly quite good, some interesting ideas and a cool lo-fi psych vibe in many sections of the album.
