Live Review: Ribongia 'Journeys'

28 October 2015 | 3:00 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

Sydney based producer Ribongia has a new track out. Titled 'Journeys', it's taken from his forthcoming EP ESCAPISMS that has been about a year in the making

I'll never forget the first time I saw RIBONGIA play a live set. It was part of EMC Play last year at the World Bar, and his set was so intricately crafted, it was any wonder there was any room left in his mind to remember to breathe.

He's got an eclectic range of musical skills, with his set incorporating many non-traditional instruments to create a gorgeous blend of live and synthesised sounds. I'm so glad this all translates between his live set and his mastered tracks, because they're both so disctinct.

The Sydney based producer has a new track out. Titled 'Journeys', it's taken from his forthcoming EP ESCAPISMS that has been about a year in the making. So I guess you know from the get go that it's going to be an incredibly well-thought out release.

The track itself incorporates everything we've previously loved about Ribongia, but with an incredibly tropical twist. It's the jungle-like beat that lifts this one up, but I just love the inconsistency in this one. There's no structure. It's incredible. He's utilised a wide variety of vocal samples, twitchy ticks and twangy percussion to create something that's always shifting.

More than anything, this one is definitely afro inspired hip hop meets footwork. It's a beautiful brand of music that never repeats itself. It's one for your headphones and one for the dancefloor. It's intricately layered with a huge bout of summer vibes slathered on over the top.

If Ribongia knows how to do anything, it's distinction. Creating that one sound that's different from the next, but with each release, you can always tell that it's his work. Distinctive and creative. It's the kind of organised chaos that can only feel so calm.
