Live Review: SOUNDCLOUD WRAP: Airling

4 September 2015 | 12:57 pm | Emma Jones

With news of a national tour and a new EP on the very near horizon, we got Airling to whip up a SoundCloud Wrap for us with all of her favourite tunes.

We’ve had our eyes on Hannah Shepherd, aka AIRLING for a while now. From winning the Triple J Unearthed spot at last year’s Splendour In The Grass, to releasing a serene and stunning EP shortly after, she’s been an exciting one to watch.

Fast forward to this year, and she shook things up with her newfound R&B prowess in the form of ‘Stallin”; a late night, lo-fi jam with a gorgeous hook and a spotlight on her rapid growth as an artist. ‘Stallin” shows off a new side to Airling, and had us captivated from the first listen and desperate for more.

Thankfully, she heard our prayers and is now delivering the goods, with news of a national tour and new EP on the very near horizon. We had the chance to pick her brain about her favourite tracks to get a bit more of an insight into one of the more promising artists we’ve seen in a while. You can listen to her favourite tracks and see her tour dates below!

Shy Girls ‘Still Not Falling’

"I just did a big run back home in Brisbane and I had this track on my playlist. There’s a lyric in it that says “I’m not an athlete, I sit at home and make beats” and it made me laugh when I was about 3/4 way through the run and I was dying! Couldn’t find the original song on soundcloud, but here’s a cool remix."

The Internet ‘Girl’

"I just love this song, it’s sexy and oozes with girl power. I feel like it projects gender equality as well which is something I feel very strongly and positive about. It gives me as a listener a real sense of empowerment."

Ainslie Wills ‘Constellations’

"This is one of the best written songs released this year. It has such a celestial beauty, while describing something seemingly as simple as a time spent as kids lying on the trampoline looking at the sky. This song makes me happy to be alive."

I’lls ‘Outright’

"This band can do no wrong in my mind. The sonic elements in all of their tracks always inspire me to create art of my own. They have haunting vocals, freaking emotive synths and it all creates a powerful and unique soundscape."

Ta-ku ‘Down For You’

"I fall deep into Alina Baraz’ voice every time I wrap my ears around this song. And this whole album from Ta-ku is amazing" (Songs to Make Up To)

Illa J ‘Timeless’

The hip hop drums and old-record-sounding piano riff in this jam make me feel all my feels. It’s like that old familiar friend that you don’t see all the time, but when you do, the good times always roll. And that voice! I would love to do a collaboration with Illa J, legend

Douglas Dare ‘Nile’

Douglas’ voice is rich and so sad. This song has an almost cinematic feel to it which always takes me to another place and reminds me how big the world is.

Selena Gomez ‘Heart Wants What It Wants’

One of my guilty pleasures…
