Live Review: World Champion ‘Avocado Galaxy’

5 September 2015 | 10:00 am | Madeline Kilby

Citing a number of influences, including Chinese takeaway, World Champion's ‘Avocado Galaxy’ is a very groove-worthy prelude to a soon to be launched EP.

Drawn together by a mutual love of psych pop and electronica Julian Sudek (of Mercy Arms fame) and Will Campion have formed WORLD CHAMPION. Citing a number of influences, including Chinese takeaway, their debut release ‘Avocado Galaxy’ is a very groove-worthy prelude to a soon to be launched EP.

The duo call Sydney home, and between them have been involved in multiple music projects over the years. Sudek provides the percussion for ‘Avocado Galaxy’, while Campion is on vocal duty. The tune itself is fun; it’s a groove anthem with a summertime feel. The percussion drives the track, combined with layers of guitar loops and clapping sounds emphasising the pop influences.

Co-produced by Jagwar Ma’s Jono Ma, the track may have a very pop feel, however there is a clear electronic edge. There is a warped kind of galactic feel to the track, and Will Campion’s vocals add an atmospheric edge like a psychedelic space trip.

The Avocado Galaxy EP is scheduled for release on vinyl in November. In the meantime there is a psychedelic dream of a video for ‘Avocado Galaxy’ due to be dropped very soon. Who knows what an avocado galaxy is, but it seems likely to be something very highly sort after.

Future Classic have brought us yet another brilliant act, this debut track is on iTunes now.
