Live Review: Josef Salvat ‘Open Season’ (Official Video)

Sydney-born, London-based singer songwriter JOSEF SALVAT also seems to be something of a comedian, as we see in the new video for his song 'Open Season'.

Sydney-born, London-based singer songwriter JOSEF SALVAT also seems to be something of a comedian.

He’s always invested time and effort into his music videos, but gone are the serious LA noir shots of ‘Hustler’ or the nostalgic throwbacks of ‘This Life’. Together, in the new video for his song ‘Open Season’, Salvat and director Ollie Wolf hilariously take down all the stock shots and all-purpose images that we’ve come to expect from music videos. We saw a similar theme in PANAMA’s new video for ‘Jungle’, but here it’s less about intellectualising the creative process and more just about having a laugh at it.

Filmed in the beautiful Spanish town of Cadaqués, the video still features the money shot, the behind-the-scenes shot, the interview shot, the close up, the unnecessary shower scene shot, the girls by the pool shot, the...leopard?. They’re all here, and they all look fantastic, but it’s all utterly up for laughs.

The single was released last year but only recently got a video – Salvat works slowly and methodically, so it’s no surprise that he took his time on the idea:

“Over the past two years I’d had so many ideas for a video for this song. But none of them would take root deeply enough. It got to a point where I’d wake up each day convinced that yesterday’s idea was the one to go with, that today’s idea was too clichéd/too niche, trying too hard/too basic, too grandiose/too boring… I started to wonder why any of this mattered. It’s just a music video, not a national budget.”
