Live Review: Kimchee 'Clockwork Happiness'

22 August 2015 | 6:11 pm | Emma Jones

Whilst we don't know much about Melbourne's Kimchee, what we do know is he makes very promising music - especially his latest track 'Clockwork Happiness'

Melbourne producer KIMCHEE is one of those acts that is delivering consistently high quality tracks to an undeservingly small audience, so I hope this changes things a little for him. His latest release, 'Clockwork Happiness', is a slow, glitchy, groovy jam in the vein of Cashmere Cat or Porter Robinson, but it's his ability to effectively manoeuvre between genres and styles with ease that sets him apart from the rest.

Starting off slow and steadily snowballing into something else entirely, Kimchee's 'Clockwork Happiness' is complete with glitchy beats, serene synth lines and muted thuds that give it a gloomy feel before kicking in to bring it up a few levels. Carefully adding to each layer, the stuttered synth melody cuts through the heavy bed of glitchy beats giving it a bit of an uplift before it plunges back down with a delicious guitar solo.

Taking cues from the likes of Ratatat with the sluggish synth ticks, the track once again picks up speed for a final hook that really reels you in. It's got a groove you can't fight, and although it's dynamic in it's approach, it never truly breaks through and thus leaves you wanting so much more.

Although there is no official word from Kimchee himself about any future works, he seems to be pretty consistent on his Soundcloud. His previous track came out three months ago though, so let's hope we don't have to wait as long for more songs like this!
