Live Review: PREMIERE: Hand Games Mix #25

19 August 2015 | 3:00 pm | Hannah Galvin

After a brief hiatus, we're stoked to see the return of Hand Games with this brand new mixtape!

It's been quite a while between drinks for HAND GAMES. What, with Luen Jacobs touring, running TAXX Thursdays, DJing at Secret GardenDark MOFO Splendour In The Grass, making zines and spinning mixes on the occasion at FBi Click and Triple J Unearthed. But the party gal has filled the hole in our hearts by curating a brand new mixtape; the first of its kind in nine months!

Buddying up with Hand Games co-pilot, Georgia Watson for her prestigious compilation skills, as well as Craig Atkins aka Wolfkid looking after the killer artwork, the team have delivered yet another stellar body of work containing 13-tracks by both Hand Games residents and very welcomed newcomers.

Martin King unlocks the mix with his starry-eyed track, 'PGF'. Accommodating the dense vocals of, Juliet Rowe sees an infrequent measure of beats and glittery synths sprinkle over the static space.

Sydney boy, Grasps_ flashes us back with a childhood outtake in, 'Anxiety', soundtracked by a young piano and lush chime; that is before throwing us into a choral dome of sluggish beats and an overwhelming sense of power.

Bedroom Suck's, Blank Realm introduce the mix to some lovestruck guitars reverberating against a percussive arrangement as they shadow a fuzzy synth gliding beneath, collectively illustrating, 'Palace Of Love'.

Cut up audio summons the antique surface that is Ototoi.'s, 'Swamp World'. Reminiscent of a vintage hip hop backdrop, this dusty number is a professional tweaker that completely confuses the concept of context.

An incredibly transcendent document taken straight from the ether sees Sydney producer, JaysWays induce virtual reality with, 'Hologlyphs'. A modest concoction indulges in the discreet rustle of bells, audible pants and cosmic synth layering, all glistening over the piercing beats and hypnotic vocals beautifully; closing out this months Hand Games mixtape.

This returning Hand Games mixtape follows on from where its predecessor left off, in that it can be downloaded from their Bandcamp for a fee of free!
