Live Review: Broadway Sounds 'Shonky Man'

30 August 2015 | 9:55 am | Emma Jones

Melbourne band Broadway Sounds manage to combine the sounds of Todd Terje and an African gospel choir for their latest single, 'Shonky Man'.

Sounding like a combination of Todd Terje and an African gospel choir, BROADWAY SOUNDS have just released their latest single titled 'Shonky Man', and we couldn't be more excited. Perhaps describing it best themselves with the tag of "afro-disco", 'Shonky Man' is 3 and a half minutes of beat driven disco funk that we can't get enough of.

Borderline frenetic, 'Shonky Man' is high energy and intensity from the get go. Complete with chants, erratic rhythms and a certain unpredictability, this track is craziness contained in the best way possible. The band said of their track's sound that it sounds like “Boney M’s tour bus getting hijacked in downtown Johannesburg and its wheels getting taken off.” Whatever that is meant to sound like, this can't be too far off.

Taken from their forthcoming second EP, 'Shonky Man' paints a brilliant picture of what is still to come from Broadway Sounds. They've been booked for both Paradise Music Festival and Beyond The Valley later this year, and are busy building a strong reputation for themselves as a live force to be reckoned with. We can't wait to see what happens next.
