Live Review: Gallu$ 'Versatile/Apathetic'

31 July 2015 | 2:15 pm | Emma Jones

Brisbane rapper Gallu$ has knocked one completely out of the park with his debut single 'Versatile/Apathetic', showing natural skill well beyond his time.

There's no denying there is a shift in the Australian hip hop scene, and that looks set to continue thanks to the debut single of Brisbane newcomer GALLU$ and his track 'Versatile/Apathetic'. Demonstrating natural skill, flow and - yes - versatility, Gallu$ is the latest and perhaps the most exciting addition to this new frontier, and could even give the front-runners a run for their money with this track.

Teaming up with producer ThovobeatsGallu$ navigates his way through not one but two tracks in this song, yet still manages to clock in at just over two and a half minutes. Don't let that fool you though, because in that time he manages to impressively show off his signature style as well as his honest and fiery lyricism.

His natural flow is perfectly complemented by Thovobeats lush sounds; from the slight crackle at the start and old time keys in the first half, with it's classic hip hop beats, to the sudden but sublime change into the second half with it's chilled-out, lo-fi vibe and dreamy piano melodies. Fierce but still laid back, Gallu$ sounds at home on the mic and, although it's an ambitious release, he has totally pulled it off.
