Live Review: SOUNDCLOUD WRAP: Antony & Cleopatra + 'Take Me' Video

5 June 2015 | 11:42 am | Tom Hutchins

We were lucky enough to get separate picks from both Antony & Cleopatra for our SoundCloud Wrap. Both offer up an eclectic mix of tunes.

London-based duo, ANTONY & CLEOPATRA, are two different souls from the opposite ends of the spectrum. The product of a pop writing session gone astray.

Over their two latest singles, which has received a very strong response, the world has been introduced to their soulful dance music. A style that possesses a classic sound with the added twist of a modern approach. Inspired by late 80s US house and 70s disco as well UK garage and bass-heavy sounds of today, Antony & Cleopatra are definitely at the future end of the pop spectrum.

The latter single 'Take Me' has just received the visual treatment. Following in the same vein of their musical influences, the video is a nod to the duo’s own name and aesthetic. It features a compilation of black and white clips of various power couples throughout the ages, reflecting their penchant for monochrome photography.

In celebration of the new video, we were lucky enough to get separate picks from both Antony and Cleopatra for our latest SoundCloud Wrap. Both offer up an eclectic mix of tunes from club ready hits, to experimental Pop.

Cleopatra

I was a huge Late of the Pier fan and played their first record to death. So when I heard about Sam Dust's solo project I was instantly intrigued. LA Priest has been a thing for a while but this is the first track he's put out and it is of course, awesome.

Aeble ft Tom Aspaul 'Better By Your Side'

The magic of this song is it's quite cyclical and doesn't change much. But the lush harmonies swell in and out making it a really delicious piece of ear candy. Tom is a friend of mine and I've written with him a few times. He's a great pop writer, I predict big things for him.

Shy Luv is the brainchild of Karma Kid and Ryan Ashley - the latter being one of my favourite voices in quite a while. It's the perfect mix of 80s, funk and pop.

I don't know a lot about Nao. All I can safely say is I've been playing it on repeat ever since I first heard it. It sounds like AlunaGeorge falling down the stairs.

Secaina Hudson 'I Ain't With You'

She writes and produces all her tracks and has a really distinctive voice and presence. Her brand of pop is subversive and that's why I think I love this track so much. I'm excited to hear what else she has lined up.

Grades 'Owe It To Yourself'

This was maybe my favourite tune of last summer. It should have been a bigger hit. It feels like the sort of song I'll play in 5 years time and it'll still sound fresh.

Roots Manuva 'Facety 2:11'

I love that this feels throwback and future at the same time. Always good to have Rodney back and Four Tet do an ace job on the production. Can't wait to hear this play out on a proper sound system this summer.

Antony

Vakula 'Steve Reich 2X5 Movement III: Fast' (Vakula Remix)

I was out last weekend and this really caught my ear amongst a sea of tracks. I've always loved the danceability of Reich and it's great to hear a classy remix of something that lives in more of the contemporary classical world.

I met these guys in New York a few weeks ago and they are on the up. I like the way this track combines a pop song with a sense of jungle. Often that combination is frightening, but they pull it off.

Motez 'One 2'

I predict bigger things for Motez this year. He still has such a unique sound and way of making records. This is my latest favourite of his.
