Live Review: Boycrush 'Flirt' Ft. Madeira

15 June 2015 | 11:11 am | Tom Hutchins

Considering that BOYCRUSH is based just across the pond in good ol' NZ, we're a little late to the party on this one.

Okay, considering that BOYCRUSH is based just across the pond in good ol' NZ, we're a little late to the party on this one. But it's such a chiller of a dance track that we couldn't not talk about it.

Taken from Alistair Deverick's second EP, 'Flirt' is the perfect opener and intro to his music. Enlisting the help of Kim Pflaum (who is best known for leading fellow NZ chillers Yumi Zouma, but since left the group to focus on her solo work as Madeira) on vocals, the track features an eclectic arrangement of soundscapes.

Things begin with a subtle but oh-so-fucking-smooth groove based bass and synth line, before Pflaum offers up a light tone that becomes the driver of the piece. Although Boycrush leaves the instrumentation spacious towards the back of the mix, the vocals are never overpowering, in fact at times it feels like she's spitting out softly spoken limericks. These poetic verses get pretty wordy, but the flow is perfection, matching the intricate placement of backing sounds every damn time.

With the name Boycrush and title 'Flirt', you wouldn't be too selfish to be expecting some smooth romantic music. And with balearic horns, Neon Indian-esque (seriously the only way we can describe them) guitar lines, uplifting vocals and dance beats floating around, that's exactly what you get. Not in that Barry White kind of sexy, more in that washed out, 80's, sepia toned, pop gem way.

Probably expect a 80's soap parody clip to come soon for this one.

'Flirt' appears on Boycrush's Girls On Top EP. You can grab a copy via his Bandcamp.
