Live Review: GRRL PAL 'Radar'

8 May 2015 | 2:35 pm | Emma Jones

Perth duo GRRL PAL have released the final track 'Radar' off their 'Paradise' EP, in a collection of their monthly long releases.

Perth duo GRRL PAL, known separately as Danny K and Jay Le Kat, have made a name for themselves in recent months thanks to their upbeat, slightly off-centre synth pop gems.

Releasing one song a month, the duo have managed to get quite a solid catalogue behind them, which is a testament to their progressive sounds and their knack for consistently outdoing the previous month's release. Latest single 'Radar' is no exception, pushing even further away from standard synth pop, and into more experimental areas.

Hook heavy and shimmering, 'Radar' is a total earworm, which could be a little annoying had it not been so enjoyable to listen to. The layered vocals from Le Kat are used almost as an extra instrument they way they've been chopped up and put back together, over K's warm, swelling production.

You could easily liken GRRL PAL to the likes of Grimes or Purity Ring, but on a closer listen, they really couldn't be more different. Danny K's meticulous layering and subtle intricacies in the production, as well as Le Kat's tremendous ability to get her voice stuck in your head for days sets them apart from other electro/synth/dream pop acts, into something entirely their own.

'Radar' is the final track off GRRL PAL's EP, Paradise, which dropped last week. If I were you, I'd be keeping a close eye out for these guys - there is no way they can stay secret for much longer!
