Live Review: This Soft Machine 'This Place Was Meant For Me' (Official Video)

29 April 2015 | 4:33 pm | Emma Jones

This Soft Machine teams up with DARKSIDE's Dave Harrington, Cut Copy's Dan Whitford and Lorraine Nicholson for his new track 'This Place Was Meant For Me'.

German-based Australian producer THIS SOFT MACHINE aka Tim Sullivan has made a name for himself by creating some of the more intriguing and different electronica in recent times, and his latest AA release is no exception.

Working with DARKSIDE's Dave Harrington on guitar, Cut Copy's Dan Whitford on synths and Lorraine Nicholson on vocals, This Soft Machine has delivered two very different tracks in 'On & On' and the latest, 'This Place Was Meant For Me' with the latter recently receiving some equally intriguing and stimulating visual treatment.

The clip was directed and animated by Niky Roehreke, who believes "hands are a powerful and honest way to communicate" and has worked with Stones Throw Records and Converse among many others before. In this clip for 'This Place Was Meant For Me', Roehreke has used literal animated interpretations of the lyrics, as well as some intricate, fun and aesthetically vivid interpretations as well.

Just as Todd Terje teamed up with LCD Soundsystem, the final product sees both song and clip feed off each other as each element enhances the other. From the immediate visual of whirring gears and flicking switches on a soundboard paired with the high pitched beeps, the synchronisation and visual representation of the track in the clip is done in such an accomplished way, it has me wondering how it can have received so little views for what it deserves.

As the bassline kicks and the synths echo throughout after the warped, deep vocals are paired with synced lips and moving backgrounds, the whole thing looks like some sort of intricate cartoon playing out to one hell of a soundtrack.

On & On/This Place Was Meant For Me is out now via Eskimo Recordings.
