Live Review: Silicon ‘God Emoji’

21 April 2015 | 6:30 pm | Katie Rowley

70s tinged nostalgia from Silicon on his debut single of funked up grooves and flashing synths that punctuate each slowly and slightly garbled word.

SILICON’s debut single, ‘God Emoji’, carves out a sound somewhat reminiscent to that of fellow Kiwi musician, Conan Mockasin. Throughout the track there are funked up grooves and flashing synths that punctuate each slowly and slightly garbled word.

The double bass line ambles up and down, contorting between the synths and softly ushered vocals. It’s a confidently disco and funk inspired track in a similar vein to the likes of Todd Terje, and swaggers around the room filling it with a 70s-tinged nostalgia.

The repetition of the line ‘don’t wanna go out on a Saturday night’ becomes a mantra for the song – much more fun to stay in and vibe to tunes like this.

The title, ‘God Emoji’, is almost inexplicable and plays up to Silicon’s ethereal and spiritual style. Perhaps he timed the release and title with the new iOs update of 300 new emojis. Still no God symbol in there though.

Silicon is a project fronted by New Zealander Kody Nielson - brother of Ruban Nielson from Unknown Mortal Orchestra - who in 2012 released his debut album, Electric Hawaii, under the moniker Opossom. This new project is signed to Domino subsidiary, WEIRD WORLD.

Psychedelic and off-centre, it’s a short and sweet cut that will no doubt be favoured by those DJs who like to dabble in the slightly different.
