Live Review: Henry Green 'Barcelona'

24 April 2015 | 6:20 pm | Emma Jones

British producer Henry Green releases first taste off his new EP. 'Barcelona' is a downtempo, heartfelt track and a great sign of what's still to come.

HENRY GREEN first came on the scene thanks to Kygo remixing his cover of MGMT's Electric Feel, which has had over 5 and a half million plays on SoundCloud since last year. It's an odd introduction considering the type of music Green is releasing now; gentle and soft electronica full of deep and slow beats and beautiful melodies.

Dropping the first taste of his forthcoming EP, fittingly titled SlowGreen turns things right down with his new track 'Barcelona'. The tender and gorgeous track sees the British producer really coming into his own as a producer and artist.

Heartfelt lyrics, subdued guitar melodies and subtle finger clicks make for a true slow burner in 'Barcelona'. Reminiscent of the emotionally charged lyricism combined with downtempo electronics of James Blake, each element of this track portrays the young artist in an intimate but empowering light as he draws you in almost immediately to hear his story.

Taking production cues from the likes of XXYYXX, the arrangements are very similar to a lot of now hugely successful artists. Admittedly, this sound could be deemed "overdone", but there is something special about the music Green is making that makes him stand out on his own. It's the intricacies that you may not realise are there until the second or third listen that prop up his production skills, combined with his unique voice and soul-bearing lyrics.

Significantly different to the Norwegian EDM producer's remix that made people first take note of him, it will not be long at all until Henry Green is known by his own music. Slow is to be released June 1 via Akira Records (also home to Shura), and is shaping up to be one hell of an EP!
