Live Review: Grasps_ ‘Dead’

18 March 2015 | 2:46 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

GRASPS_ has a real knack for making something out of seemingly nothing, because his latest single 'Dead' is just so damn simple, but feels so complex.

They’ve hashtagged it with #RIP, and I kinda feel a bit that way. GRASPS_ is the project of Christian Whitwell out of Sydney, and it’s a pretty big one.

Clocking in at fewer than 10 originals on SoundCloud, GRASPS_ seems to be a fairly new project. However upon first listen, it doesn’t really feel to be that way.

It’s an incredibly seasoned project, and the sounds appear to be really well considered. Minimal in its instrumental value and maxed out in its direction and incredible delivery, ‘Dead’ is percussion heavy and rhythm persistent. It’s got a big hook that breaks down into this deep pit of hard-hitting snares and hi-hats.

GRASPS_ has a real knack for making something out of seemingly nothing, because it’s just so damn simple. But it’s incredibly effective and has a strong delivery.

‘Dead’ is experimental in its sounds and moreso in its delivery, but I think it’s the simplicities in the sampled vocals and percussions that make this feel so authentic. Props to GRASPS_ for this killer number.
