Live Review: Conics ‘Burning Up’

3 March 2015 | 9:00 am | Caitlin Medcalf

Sydney five-piece CONICS are making a comeback with their shiny new single 'Burning Up'.

I caught these guys a while ago on support duties for DMA’s at Goodgod Small Club. There are five guys in the group, all contributing some form of outer-circle music knowledge and style to CONICS’ aesthetic.

They create indie electronica, a wave that’s been on a steady rise for the last few years now. However, I think it’s a little more than that.

Their comeback single ‘Burning Up’ sees the boys exploring more of a sound reminiscent of MIAMI HORROR mixed with some of the tropical flavours emanating out of VAN SHE’s ‘Idea of Happiness’.

‘Burning Up’ is this shiny mix of clever synths, pineapple tones and summery keyboards. It’s got a metallic aesthetic however, and it’s this that makes it seem glossy and refined more than anything.

Live, the group is incredibly tight. With five people on stage, I guess they would have to be. But they’ve really stepped it up on ‘Burning Up’. They’ve refined their sound to a T, and I’m really keen to see what’s going to come of CONICS’ new found direction in 2015.
