Live Review: Nunca Duerma ‘Fast’

27 February 2015 | 4:55 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

Nunca Duerma out of Chicago in the US is doing big things in single 'Fast'. He's incorporated syncopated beats and dissonant sounds for a gorgeous hit.

I’m not sure what’s in the drinking water over in the US, but there’s a significant number of producers emerging from out of the woodwork who seem to be embracing change.

NUNCA DUERMA out of Chicago is doing just this. He’s got a knack for experimenting overtly with hip hop and electronica, but it’s not as conventional as you’d think.

‘Fast’ is his latest single. Its beat is slightly syncopated, and is one that I haven’t heard anything like. It’s off beat, but when the keyboard is added, it makes sense. There’s a flow to it, a rhythm of sorts that sounds musically, like a musician rapping.

It’s percussive mastery, and feels whole. There’s this eerie bird-like sample that is laced throughout the track’s entirety, one that sounds quite haunting and seems to emanate this dark, brooding atmosphere.

I particularly like where this track heads. It’s almost as though it’s been portioned out into sections or “parts” I guess, but it’s constantly evolving and changing to suit the driving nature of the hip-hop that’s embedded into it.

NUNCA DUERMA has created some big beats here. A kind that challenges conventions, and paves the way for other percussive oriented beats to become imperative.
