Live Review: Nick Hill 'Rut'

23 February 2015 | 5:33 pm | Hannah Galvin

Nick Hill has released the beautifully executed title track to his debut EP, 'Rut'.

Sydney man NICK HILL is local label Yes Please's latest signee. Now familiar with his EP's first single, 'Know This', Hill has since released the title track, 'Rut'.

Being emotionally stuck in a rut will leave you frustratingly questioning how you succumbed to such a lowered state of constant worry and regret. Your head becomes clouded and judgement is misconstrued, making this so-called "rut" feel like it may never fade away. This has been translated in the craftsmanship of 'Rut'.

The harrowing, horn-like melody harmonising with the begrudging of it's deeper counterpart sends alarm bells in that it's shakiness is disconcerting. Group that element with the repetition and habitual overlap of vocals against the delicate choice of handclaps (to substitute the confidence of a drumbeat), and you're left with a seriously solemn tune.

Although broken in its persona, 'Rut' is aesthetically identified as a really beautiful piece, for the raw heartache has encapsulated a natural human expression that everyone experiences at some point in their life.
