Live Review: Flower Drums 'Don't Wait' ft. St South

21 January 2015 | 7:12 pm | Emma Jones

Perth band Flower Drums team up with fellow Perth singer St. South for a hazy dream pop track "Don't Wait" off their forthcoming EP, 28 Mansions.

Perth band FLOWER DRUMS had a pretty big year last year. Scoring the Unearthed slot at their leg of St Jerome's Laneway Festival and being nominated for a WAM as well as touring the US. Now they are back with their latest track, Don't Wait featuring fellow Perth songstress ST SOUTH

Hazy dream pop at it's finest, Don't Wait is a gentle song that floats along, carried by a bed of warm synths and sparse soundscapes. The contrast between ST SOUTH's quirky, unique vocals and frontman Leigh Craft's falsetto adds extra complexity to the seemingly effortless tune. The clear, crisp beats pierce the haze intermittently, as the wispy melodies swirl.

What's interesting about Don't Wait is the R&B stylings of Craft's vocals, along the same lines as HOW TO DRESS WELL. Breathy and gentle, yet captivating and emotive, his style is perfectly complimented by the rest of the band's R&B leanings. It's this genre-blending that makes FLOWER DRUMS as impressive as they are.

Don't Wait is off the band's forthcoming EP 28 Mansions out in March. The EP will also feature the previously released Bad Websites, which sees the band initially heading down a more dance-oriented direction. The differences in this track and Don't Wait make for one highly anticipated release come March, as we continue to see just where these guys are heading!
