Live Review: Falcon Punch 'Silk'

22 January 2015 | 12:00 am | Caitlin Medcalf

The Minneapolis based producer Falcon Punch has just dropped his latest smooth-as-butter nu-disco/funk gem 'Silk'

Like the song title suggests, FALCON PUNCH’s latest track is actually as smooth as ‘Silk’. Based in Minneapolis in the US, Avery Henderson is the wonder wizard behind these buttery sounds.

‘Silk’ is a wonderlust collective of sounds that make you want to stay out late and dance the night away. It’s funky, it’s soft, but at the same time, it’s very clever in the way he has approached the production of it. The subtle chirp of the guitar in the background makes for the funk aspect, and I feel as though the crooning female vocals contribute to the more nu-disco side of the sound.

It’s quite beautiful actually, and it's the little nuances throughout the track that make it what it is. For example, the careful percussion breathes new life into the repeated synth line in the deep background, and it is the driving hi-hat that really adds a sharp gleam to the entire track.

FALCON PUNCH has very obviously taken quite an amount of time to create this track, and it’s the way it sits when you listen to it that for me, is quite memorable. I particularly love the way that he’s achieved an overt balance with all of his sounds, accounting for the way they tessellate as one.
