Live Review: Total Giovanni 'Can't Control My Love'

10 December 2014 | 10:11 pm | Emma Jones

Melbourne quintet Total Giovanni have released their second track Can't Control My Love, ahead of an album predicted out next year!

After the success of their debut track, Human Animal Melbourne act TOTAL GIOVANNI are solidifying their reputation as a force to be reckoned with in their next track, Can't Control My Love

Having supported CLIENT LIAISON, as well as played at Dark MofoMelbourne Music Week and most recently Paradise, as well as being locked in to play Golden Plains next year, TOTAL GIOVANNI are one sought after act.

They've been busy making a name for themselves with their outrageous live shows, however it was their debut track that showed us there was more to them - much more.

The way they effortlessly pull off this nostalgia-filled dance music, weaving in between the '70s, '80s and even '90s, is what makes them so interesting and refreshing. Starting off slow with a simple synth melody, the drum beats kick in with the feel-good yet powerful '80s lyrics.

The poly-rhythmic and soulful jam swirls and rises, and the undeniable (though constantly noted) influences of TALKING HEADS or LCD SOUNDSYSTEM are consistent yet not overpowering. In fact, they build on that, choosing what to work with into their own unique sound. Pulling right back to a trickle, with a spoken word bridge, it leads the way into a '70s style vocal harmony section. There are even some MIAMI HORROR elements here as the track kicks back up to a hand clapping, piano house section and truly takes off, and takes over.

They've been working on an album due out next since being signed to TWO BRIGHT LAKES and REMOTE CONTROL RECORDS, with a single launch at Melbourne's SHEBEEN on 20th December, supported by LA POCOCK. If there is one thing for certain, it's that TOTAL GIOVANNI is a name we will be hearing a lot of in the very near future. In the words of the band themselves, "Free Yourself..."
