Live Review: DZ Deathrays 'Lonely This Christmas'

2 December 2014 | 9:00 am | Lauren Payne

DZ Deathrays have done something you probably never would have thought they would do; release a Christmas song.

This article will be showcasing two things that you probably thought you'd never see DZ DEATHRAYS do in your lifetime. The first is seeing the Brisbane-based duo cover and ELVIS PRESLEY track and the second, is seeing them cover an ELVIS PRESLEY Christmas track.

Shane Parsons and Simon Ridley have recorded a cover of 'Lonely This Christmas', a track the "King" released during his later years and MUD made famous during the Christmas of 1974. The track is originally quite slow, a Christmas ballad with a few "bom, bom, bom, bom" lines thrown in.

The song's lyrics tell the very emotional story of a man spending Christmas alone after his significant other has left him but in true DZ DEATHRAYS style, the ballad has been transformed into a rock anthem.

Along with the band's signature guitar tracks, DZ DEATHRAYS have injected in some heavily distorted vocals and an explosive drum track to bring 'Lonely This Christmas' into a new age. The track sounds like one you can drunkenly sing along to with your mates, as well as one you can sing with you family over cold meat (although your parents may prefer the original).

'Lonely This Christmas' was really only known by your parents and grandparents as the boppy carol MUD was famous for, but now the track will be known to us as the very first Christmas carol recorded by Brisbane's rock gods, DZ DEATHRAYS.
