Live Review: Premiere: Deutsch Duke 'Feels Good' (Berlin Edit)

27 November 2014 | 11:05 pm | Emma Jones

Sydney producer Deutsch Duke released summer jam, Feels Good, last month. Now, the Berlin Edit takes a slower approach, complete with mystery and suspense.

You should, by now, be familiar with last month's DEUTSCH DUKE's release, Feels Good - the poppy, DISCLOSURE-esque track that was positively dripping in feel good (pun intended) vibes.

Now, we are bringing you the BERLIN edit; the darker, mysterious cousin dripping in suspense. Completely overhauling the track, this new edit has tipped the track on it's head and breathed a new, and eerie, life into it.

Having already been spun by RICHARD KINGSMILLBAG RAIDERS and being selected as "Pick Of The Week" by KLPFeels Good has definitely been making it's way around dancefloors and in people's ears. This already laid ground work has made way for Berlin's edit; complete with echoey clicks, a dark bassline, and a much more sparse soundscape.

Starting off with a pulsing bassline and intermittent cymbal smashes, the once dancefloor ready track is now somewhat suspensful and eerie. What was initially feel good lyrics now have been changed into an almost forlorn sound, with the soulful vocals a la SAM SMITH are now higher pitched and packed with reverb.

The hook kicks in with some finger clicks, and samples sparingly used consistent with the sparse nature of the song. Synths whirl and soar, then suddenly track is brought back again. This to-ing and fro-ing of the track continues throughout, working with that bassline in building even more suspense and tension - as if that's even possible. As each layer is added, the song builds in anticipation until the breakdown, which fades out to nothing just as quickly as it builds.

Deutsch Duke has already worked alongside ELIZABETH ROSEFLIGHT FACILITIES and CASSIAN, so it's not just us that think he's pretty damn good. There is talk of more music to come from the Duke camp around February. If these tracks are anything to go by, the new material can't come soon enough!
