Live Review: MAIA 'Life Is A Lie'

26 November 2014 | 4:00 pm | Emma Jones

Life Is A Lie is the latest taste from honey-voiced Brisbane nu-neo lo-fi singer MAIA. Produced by The Intrnet, the smooth track is a huge step forward.

Introducing MAIA, the Brisbane based newcomer who is bound for big things with her latest track, Life Is A Lie. Smooth, sultry and somewhat subtle, hidden behind a huge head of curls, Maïa is the next best thing to come out of Brisbane's slowly emerging soul scene.

In the recent uprising of soulful songstresses that has come into it's own in 2014, this alternative R'n'B sound has made way for the likes of SZA, figurehead FKA TwigsSOLANGE and KELELA to truly take centre-stage in the mainstream. Because of this, a plethora of other honey-voiced nu-neo soul ladies have been following suit. However, because of the sudden and rapid surge, it takes something special to stand out.

Impossibly smooth, Life Is A Lie shows a lyrical depth not often heard from artists such as this until much further down the track. The track weaves it's way through existential questions, but lulls you into security with Maïa's caressing vocals. Soft and seductive, she croons and effortlessly shows what she's made of. The glitchy hip-hop beats throw in some R'n'B nostalgia for good measure, as well as a soulful female sample tying it all together.

Produced by The Intrnet, Life Is A Lie is a huge step forward for Maïa. Having already garnered some nods from Hilly Dilly and Acclaim, this is certainly only the beginning. Where her previous tracks, found on her SOUNDCLOUD, are just as smooth and chilled out, Life Is A Lie is a real turning point. The production is flawlessly tight, and when combined with her light and flowing, yet continually maturing voice, it's no wonder the track is already being splashed around the internet like it's the latest craze - because it is.

Although there is talk of a forthcoming project, Lo Fi, the magnetic soon-to-be-star is somewhat reserved. Perhaps she is biding her time to truly explode, but until then these little tastes will have to do!
