Live Review: Twerps 'Back To You' (Official Video)

15 October 2014 | 6:54 pm | Hannah Galvin

To coincide with exciting touring news, Melbourne band Twerps have released their second album's new single, 'Back To You'.

God damn, it's an exciting time to be involved with Melbourne's TWERPS right now. Not only are they set to play the Sugar Mountain Festival this coming January, they've also just been deemed the main support act for Belle & Sebastian's forthcoming Australian visit!

To top it all off, Twerps have just released their second record's leading single, 'Back To You' with a video clip to match.

A celebration of sorts, 'Back To You' is an upbeat, happy-go-lucky kinda guy. The signature guitar jangles and rythymic percussive elements are all at hand, and are eternally lifted by an extremely jovial melody. So in saying that, it's kind of humorous that both the lyrics and video paint a picture of self-loathing, essentially endorsing the idea that life just really sucks.

We're witness to a bunch of images that so obviously involve human activity, yet are framed to be perceived as completely lifeless. Through the burrowing of old shop fronts, abandoned houses, beat up cars and even a handful of lonely Twerps members, the tune manages to carry us along, reminding us that life simply cannot be this shit forever. Symbolically summed up at the close of the clip, we watch a dude climb level upon level of an elevator ride as he yearns for his own successes.

'Back To You' is the leading single off Twerps' forthcoming second record, Range Anxiety, and follows their 2014 Underlay EP. With the album to be released through Chapter Music and Merge Records late January, Merge will also be distributing a 7" vinyl release of the new single with non-album B-side, 'Always Waiting' on Tuesday, 4th November.
