Live Review: Tei Shi 'Bassically'

23 October 2014 | 1:43 pm | Emma Jones

Tei Shi returns with new dance track, Bassically, as well as signing to Caroline Australia, Mom + Pop and Double Denim.

Argentinian born, Vancouver/Bogota/Boston raised, New York City residing Tei Shi (or Valerie Teicher) is all grown up, and now has the song to prove it. After recently dropping her latest single Bassically - out October 31 - she has been getting some serious internet love.

Topping Hype Machine, and clocking over 166 000 plays on SoundCloud, Bassically sees the natural evolution of Tei Shi's sound from her previous critically acclaimed EP Saudade, (including debut single M&Ms), which was produced by Luca Buccellati and saw her first entering the spotlight.

Comprised of disco beats, pulsating synths and her trademark uniquely airy vocals, Bassically is seriously impressive. The gritty and fuzzy production of the track, paired with the clear and crisp soaring of the vocals takes the track to another level not yet seen by Teicher. It's grown up electro-pop, with passionate lyrics and vocal stylings, but never strays from dance territory.

The sensual vocals bring the listener along through the lyrics of the highs and lows of a lover who just isn't quite getting her. As the track builds, the frustration does too, and culminates almost in a warning in between her pleas. She pushes her voice to show its full potential, as it builds to a soaring heights yet doesn't eclipse the disco/electro pop infused instrumentation.

She has also recently signed to Australia's Caroline, UK's Double Denim, AND US's Mom + Pop, which makes me expect we will be seeing a fair bit of Tei Shi in the near future. She has already been booked for numerous showcases at the CMJ festival, played at SXSW and has worked with Glass Animals on their track, Holiest, which debuted at #1 on Hype Machine. with other new material expected to be released soon.
