Live Review: Young Franco 'Close 2 U' EP

13 July 2014 | 12:00 am | Lauren Payne

Young Franco has released his second EP in seven months and it reminds us all why we fell in love with his music i the first place.

There is this feeling some people get after they meet someone where they think they might see that person everywhere. This is usually pure coincidence but after meeting YOUNG FRANCO we did see him everywhere, but that was no coincidence.

Ever since his FUTUREFUNK EP debuted right here on Purple Sneakers, Brisbane producer Joey Da Rin has had his name plastered absolutely everywhere. With a series of fun remixes and exciting original tracks under his belt, YOUNG FRANCO already has a catalogue of music most artists probably wouldn't have until just after the one year mark.

With Splendour In The Grass appearances only weeks away, this hard-working producer has decided that one EP just wasn't enough. With FUTUREFUNK only being released in December last year, seven months later YOUNG FRANCO has released his second EP entitled Close 2 U. Unlike his first EP, Close 2 U only features two new tracks however with the amount of remixes this boys has been churning out over the past few months, one can see why two is more than enough original material for this release.

The title track features the sweet vocals of JOY and, funnily enough, fills you with joy. The smooth synths that build up the 'Close 2 U' just seem to glide over the vocals with ease before upbeat piano tracks, and YOUNG FRANCO's signature funk, burst out from beneath the initial synth track. You have a good mix of sounds in this piece with some sections being incredibly atmospheric, hollow synths making other sections sound very digital and lastly the upbeat sections using marimbas to create a groove that quickly gets you moving.

The second track on the EP, 'Hurricane', is a fully instrumental release. Without the added extra of vocals, here we are brought back into FRANCO's production work and engulfed in sweet samples. The beginning of the track feels groovy and influenced slightly by early 2000's garage, but that's of course before we fall into a large drop that has a heavy synth thumping through it. The drop is one you'll definitely see yourself dancing to next time your having a night out because 'Hurricane' sounds like it will be in a fair few live sets as it spreads across the internet.

YOUNG FRANCO's Close 2 U EP reminds us why we got hooked on his music in the first place and gives us something to listen to whilst he travels around the globe to perform and create even more great material.
