Live Review: Ribongia 'Slave Trade'

4 July 2014 | 3:17 pm | Lauren Payne

Ribongia is an Italian producer who lives in Sydney and works with a variety of African beats. Think that' international enough for you? Just wait until you hear his latest single.

Ribongia - Slave Trade

Try this on for size, an Italian producer living in Australia making crazy beats with African samples. Now this is what we call international, RIBONGIA is the Sydney-based producer who is blending together basically every good piece of African percussion, house synths and electronic melodies to create the most energetic dance tracks.

When you read his biography on his Facebook page, there are a few words that describe his music: chaos, pandemonium, rowdiness and general mischief. RIBONGIA itself is Italian slang for disarray, so Antonio Rosselli Del Turco seems to have chosen a very fitting name for his production moniker.

The Italian native has had a very busy career already. Sharing stages with FLYING LOTUS and remixing NGAIIRE are just two of his finer achievements and today we have a new single of his for you to dive into called 'Slave Trade'. This track is not for the faint hearted as it will knock you off your feet from the get go. At first it may sound scattered and chaotic but after a second listen, you become immersed in the various sounds and samples used and finally you see how many different elements are working together to create such a bold track.

As soon as you press play you can hear the beat thumping along steadily and loud African melodies quickly building themselves up until they burst with life. The house elements of the track may feel slightly odd at first considering what they're being paired with, however soon you se how the contrasting sounds begin to work together and you get a sense of peace between them. 'Slave Trade' is basically full of contrasting sounds but they all seem to work together well in the piece so that it still flows with ease whilst being incredibly fast.

You can grab 'Slave Trade' when it is released on October Records in the next few weeks. RIBONGIA has a few more things up his sleeve and they will no doubt be flying around the internet very soon.
