Live Review: LISTEN: Guerre 'Deatheat'

6 May 2014 | 1:11 pm | Hannah Galvin

Sydney-based producer Guerre has announced details of his debut full-length album Ex Nihilo, alongside the LP's first single 'Deatheat'.

Canadian-born, Sydney-based producer Lavurn Lee has co-released the due date of his debut album 'Ex Nihilo' alongside its third track 'Deatheat' for his solo project GUERRE.

Reluctantly creeping into a long, dark tunnel, 'Deatheat' harbours the constant eeriness of the shadow of a being we fail to locate. Grouping the blunt, hollow percussion that has become a Guerre signature alongside the gentle, cold hum of a snaky synth-line to hold this track together, 'Deatheat' explores great depth within its allocated timeframe.

Through the additional husky vocals that breathes over the same sonic production trapping the empty, distant cries, 'Deatheat' facilitates dark, emotive power that lives as a delicately ample first taste of what is now expected to be an amazing debut record.

Whilst writing Ex NihiloGuerre found himself experimenting with how to adapt concepts to certain constructive elements:

"In this album there's a new way of thinking about expressing in rhythmic value more so than melodic or structural value... It's some kids fucked up way of making emotional rhythm based music" as well as disengaging too much of himself from the completed product, "My older stuff was so much more emotional, personal and sentimental, whereas the new album is much more disconnected from that. It was an opportunity to see what type of music I could make if I 'removed' a level of myself".

Recorded over the course of a year with some production assistance from Collarbones' Marcus Whale, Guerre's Ex Nihilo will be ready for all to hear on Friday, 4th July via Yes Please Records and Remote Control. Grab 'Deatheat' for free digital download HERE.
