Live Review: Banks Drops New Single 'Goddess'

30 April 2014 | 11:35 am | Lauren Payne

Banks has released the title track from her new album and it's got more bite than you'd expect.

The soulful songstress BANKS has released yet another single from her new album Goddess and this time it's actually the title track.

'Goddess' has been a highly anticipated album mainly because BANKS has drawn in a huge fan base with her smooth vocals and sweet melodies. Many of her pieces have caught our eye, 'Waiting Game' was a wonderful release and then LOSTON decided that he would remix it into something completely unique. 'Brain' also made huge waves the day it was unleashed, and Perth producer TA-KU agreed, which then led to another remix.

On 'Goddess', BANKS has again teamed up with producer Lil Silva, with whom she previously worked with on 'This Is What It Feels Like' . The collaboration seems to be working well for them because 'This Is What It Feels Like' became a wonderfully sombre track and 'Goddess' is also wonderful, just something a little bit different from the artist.

'Goddess' is a bit of a kick in the face, because with lyrics like "'cause she's a goddess, you never got this", you know there's some bite beneath the sweet vocals. BANKS usually releases very emotional songs which tend to catch our eye because her voice is twice as emotional as the story she's telling, but here, we have a brand new story and with her vocals staying low and deep, we know this is something big. With a very steady percussion and brooding synths hovering throughout the track, 'Goddess' sounds like something that has been bubbling for quite a while. The harmonies in the track stand out as they always do and as the song gets into it's groove, we have crunchy synths rise up to work in sync with the lighter synths.

In 'Goddess' we see a harder version of BANKS that was bound to emerge at some point or another and what better place to do it than on her new album. Goddess will be released on September 9, but you can pre-order it on iTunes here if you feel like you need it now.
